Students and families in the Edmonton Catholic School District enjoyed an evening of music, dance and video games at the launch of the Active Exergaming Project at St. Teresa School, in Edmonton, on November 15.
St. Teresa School purchased a DanceDanceRevolution Classroom Edition with the help of community grants. The device merges exercise, dance and video games (hence exergames), allowing up to 48 people to play simultaneously, synchronizing rhythmic movements on a dance pad to directions scrolled onto a screen or wall.
The device will alternate between the district’s eight participating schools during the 2013/14 school year. Schools will incorporate exergames into their physical education curriculum within Alberta Education’s Wellness Framework. It is hoped that this project will increase physical activity for teachers, students and their families.
